Join us at the gallery for a conversation with the curator of In the Shadows, where we will be discussing the concept, inspiration, and selected works in the exhibition. A brief walking tour of the gallery will be provided by curator Italu Ramos Hernandez. There will be time for Q&A.
About In the Shadows
The title "In the Shadows" draws on the phrase "living in the shadows," a term often used to describe immigrants in the United States. It evokes a state of invisibility, of existing in silence. The exhibition seeks to reclaim immigrant stories by bringing together works that explore memory, displacement, belonging, and identity beyond political narratives. By centering voices that are too often ignored, In the Shadows not only humanizes immigrant experiences but challenges broader political ideas of legality, recognition, and who is permitted to belong. Artists include Carmen Lizardo, Golnar Adili, Katie Mongoven, Ruth Alvarez Luna, and Sammy Lee.
In the Shadows will be on view at Union Hall through October 3 with open gallery hours Wednesday through Saturday from 12-6pm.
